Forgive me Fashionistas, for I have sinned.

I washed a dry-clean only silk and cashmere sweater in the washing machine. With regular detergent. Not on the gentle cycle. And then I dried it in the dryer.

See, I got this sweater a few years ago from the Victoria's Secret Catalog, and frankly I am much too lazy to keep taking it to the freaking dry cleaner. So I was like, whatever, if it ruins it, at least I got a few good years of wear out of it. And I was going to hang dry it, but I forgot, so... it went through the dryer, too.

Oh, and it's completely fine. Like, good as new. Seriously. Which is making me think that this whole dry-cleaning thing is a scam. Because shouldn't it have been ruined? Well, it's not. That is all.

OMG I've never dried a cashmere sweater before...thought about it, but was too afraid. I did wash a cashmere sweater I got from J.Crew....with other clothes...on regular cycle and it was fine. Thanks for the dryer tip lol!

I CANNOT believe it didn't shrink!!! Really, are you sure?! Now, go try it on again just in case because the washing i get but the heat should have shrunk it. No really, go measure it and let us know. I'll be here waiting...

You shouldn't be apologizing to the fashionistas... you should be apologizing to the dry cleaners! 'Cuz now we know they're a hoax! :)

I agree! Just a huuuge scam, and to think how much money I've spent there..

Very few things truly need to be dry cleaned. Silk almost always washes well, and if you put in a dryer sheet and iron it when you are done, it even keeps its softness very well.

Some fabrics do shrink, but I tend to agree with you -- at some point, I figure, eh, I've gotten my money's worth. If it ruins it, fine, it not, I can start saving money on cleaning bills!

I'm a firm believer in the fact that companies just say "dry clean only" because they're counting on people to be dummies in the laundry room and don't want to have to deal with the fallout. But, if you're washer and dryer savvy, you should be fine with the majority of "dry clean only" clothes!

Not that I claim to be either washer or dryer savvy! :)

I own several dry clean only skirts (that I rarely wear) and I have never dry cleaned them and they are fine. I agree dry cleaner = hoax. However...I am not about to throw my Wedding Dress in a w/d - I think that's really the only thing dry cleaners are good for.

Of course the whole dry clean thing is a scam! I mean I would have probably done gentle cycle. And I don't dry my clothes on high anyway...but for years I regular wash dry clean stuff. Yep...dupioni silk throw pillow covers. Check! And there was nothing wrong with them. Down comforter? Check! Ha, I won the war against Martinizing Cleaners!

Legalmist is soo right. As someone who's actually taken a class called "textile science" as part of fashion design school... I'm here to tell you that the "dry clean only" is totally a scam. companies don't want to be responsible if you do something stupid in the laundry room.
silk is actually the most durable natural fiber.
but don't do what you did to wool... totally another story. (although it doesn't actually need to be dry cleaned either.)

Well thats a great money saving tip! Even though I tend to ruin things in the washing machine that arent silk and cashmere, like cotton.

I always do the same thing. I'm so lazy with laundry.

When I do it at least. But usually my mom does it.
I hate dry cleaners. Way too expensive. And your clothes always come back with a mystery stain.

Hmm wifey always claims that I ruin her stuff in the washer and dryer. Maybe it was her way to get us that super doooper front loader with the dry clean button on it. Talk about hoax.

Also my awkwardness will be on full display tomorrow.

Can't say I've ever owned any cashmere, but I wash and dry other Dry Clean Only clothes all the time. Only one thing ever shrunk. Just one. No biggie. It wasn't my favorite one either. :-)

I just caught Sassy B's first comment and have to say I absolutely agree. The clothing companies are just trying to prevent returns or complaints or (egad) lawsuits over laundry mishaps. So, if they make you dry clean everything they are in the clear: either you dry clean it (and take your troubles up with the Dry Cleaner if the garment gets damaged) or you say eh and wash it yourself and then when you try to complian later, they can say you didn't follow directions. Shifty, isn't it? (wink)

Good to know - I hate dry cleaning clothes. Although I just about cry everytime I ruin a piece of clothing so maybe I shouldnt risk it.

I have a lot of dry clean only things that I wash on the "handwash" cycle, then air dry. Never had a problem.

I've got a bridesmaid dress that needs to be cleaned. I don't really care what happens to it - especially not enough to pay $46 (which is what the drycleaner quoted me) - I just hate the idea of it sitting in my closet dirty. I've been thinking about just sending it through a wash and seeing what happens. ;)

Be careful, I had a co-worker who said she had done the same thing by accident. Within a couple of hours of actually wearing it at work, the thing simply disintegrated. While she was wearing it. Luckily, we had some promotional tee shirts laying around.
